A keepsake photo at Croatia's most-visited shrine.
MomentoSnap is installed on the pilgrimage square (hodočasnički trg) in front of the Basilica of the Assumption at Marija Bistrica - the heart of Croatia's largest Marian shrine, Svetište Majke Božje Bistričke. The green Zagorje hills rise behind the basilica, the open-air Calvary staircase leads the eye up toward the monumental altar on the hill, and the square itself is quiet enough between pilgrimage days to feel like somewhere you can actually pause. Step up to the booth, touch the screen, pose, pay, and walk away with a printed 4×6 keepsake and a free high-resolution digital copy on your phone - about fifteen seconds, no operator, no queue, no app needed.
- Address
- Pilgrimage square (Hodočasnički trg), in front of the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Marija Bistrica 49246, Croatia
- Open
- Every day the shrine grounds are accessible - typically from early morning until late evening year-round. The booth itself runs 24/7 once you reach the square.
How to find it
From Zagreb, take the A2 motorway north towards Varaždin and exit at Zabok, then follow the regional road east towards Zlatar and Marija Bistrica. The drive takes about 35-40 minutes depending on traffic. Marija Bistrica is well signposted throughout Zagorje.
Buses run regularly from Zagreb's main bus station (Autobusni kolodvor Zagreb) to Marija Bistrica - the journey takes roughly an hour and buses operate throughout the day, with more frequent services on major pilgrimage dates.
The MomentoSnap booth is on the large pilgrimage square directly in front of the basilica's main facade. Park at one of the town car parks and walk through the main approach road - you'll see the square and the basilica ahead of you.
Best time to come
Early morning on a weekday is the most peaceful time to visit - the square is quiet, morning Mass draws a small congregation, and the Zagorje hills catch a gentle light that makes for a beautiful backdrop behind you in the photo. The major pilgrimage dates (Assumption of Mary on 15 August draws hundreds of thousands of visitors) are extraordinary to witness, but the square will be crowded. Spring and early autumn are pleasant for walking up the Calvary hill after taking the photo.

About Marija Bistrica
Veneration of the Black Madonna at Marija Bistrica dates to the 16th century, when the small wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin - dark-stained and known as the Crna Madona - was reportedly hidden in the church wall to protect it during Ottoman raids, and later found undamaged. The shrine grew steadily over the following centuries; the current neo-Gothic basilica was designed by Herman Bollé, the same architect responsible for much of Zagreb's Cathedral and Mirogoj Cemetery, and consecrated in 1883. The surrounding pilgrimage complex - including the large square and the Way of the Cross hill behind the church - was expanded substantially in the 20th century. The defining moment of modern pilgrimage history here came on 3 October 1998, when Pope John Paul II visited Marija Bistrica and beatified the controversial wartime cardinal Alojzije Stepinac at the open-air altar on the Calvary hill. The event drew an estimated 400,000 people and cemented Marija Bistrica's place as the spiritual centre of Croatian Catholic life. The shrine receives over one million visitors a year.
